Mazey’s carefully composed yet rough-hewn works capture a wistful beauty in the artist’s practice, tearing away the bubbly optimism of his previous works. Expanding his use of ceramic slabs, the artist has created a range of works in raku and stoneware including ceramic wall “paintings”, free-standing totems, a functionally-lit ceramic lamp and an installation of 9 separate wall works comprising a “petrified wall garden”. Mazey embraces the inherent fallibility and uncontrolled nature of the ceramic medium and successfully balances that in-built naivete with elegant composition and painterly application of platinum and gold lustre.
