Making Nice Things

Mazey’s deeply expressive works capture the artist’s inherent and effusive optimism through a playful and naive lens. Utilising ceramic slabs, Mazey has created a range of pieces including lamps, totems, wall panels and vessels as well as several functionally lit, linear wall installations made up of a series of elegantly rippled ceramic tiles. The works’ rough-hewn maximalism is a celebration of the inherent fallibility of the ceramic medium, with lavishly applied glazes and sumptuous construction evoking an unhinged, almost decadent exuberance. Mazey’s use of functional and archetypal forms lend a cozy domesticity to his works, which in his words, aim to simply “be nice”.
